Knowing and Doing The Will of God
The story of Balaam from Numbers 22-24 serves as a powerful warning about the difference between hearing God's voice and actually obeying it. What makes this account so fascinating is that Balaam never struggled to hear God clearly - his problem was surrendering to what he heard. We discover three dimensions of God's will: His sovereign will that accomplishes His purposes regardless of human participation, His general will revealed through Scripture, and His specific will uniquely designed for each of us. The tension many of us experience isn't about lacking information but about lacking surrender. Balaam's journey reveals how easily we can negotiate with God after He's already given us a clear answer, hoping He'll change His mind when what we really need is obedience. The supernatural element of a donkey seeing the angel that the prophet couldn't see creates a striking irony - sometimes God places obstacles in our path as acts of mercy, not punishment. This message challenges us to examine whether we're truly seeking God's will or simply seeking permission to do what we've already decided. When God says no, continuing to ask until we hear yes isn't faith - it's rationalization. The call is to surrender completely, trusting that the most secure place we can be is directly in the center of God's will for our lives.
